Aluminum LY12
LY12 is a high-strength alloy of the aluminum-copper-magnesium system characterized by its moderate composition, excellent performance, and wide availability across the globe. Its high strength alongside moderate heat resistance makes it suitable for components that operate at ―150 ‘C. The hot formability of LY12 is good in the quenched and annealed states, and while its heat treatment possesses significant strengthening effects, it poses a challenge in terms of precision. LY12 does not exhibit good corrosion resistance but is protected through aluminum coating. Its welding difficulties stem from its crack susceptibility, yet advanced techniques allow for riveting or welding. LY12 find extensive applications in aircraft structures and structural components such as rivets, truck wheels, and propellers.
